Digital Engineer

Job No: MONA438
Location: Hobart

Digital Engineer
Hobart CBD

Come and join us at Mona where your technical chops, creative problem-solving, and good taste will help us convert a soup of systems, data, questionable ideas, and good intentions into humane digital experiences in the service of Art (and charity, and plain old commerce).

This position is based in Hobart (on the waterfront, in an old art deco newspaper building), and is part of Mona’s in-house communications agency. The team is responsible for about 40 Mona brands including the museum, two premium wineries, Tassie’s biggest craft brewer, a music and arts festival, a fleet of giant catamarans with fibreglass animals for seats, a recording studio, a record label, a bunch of hard liquor startups, chef’s hatted restaurants, about nine bars and even a cosmetics brand that may or may not turn invasive species into face scrubs.

This is an exciting role for a developer with creative flair who wants to get involved in a diverse range of development work. We want someone who is motivated to be involved in all aspects of Mona’s digital requirements; who approaches the role with excellent problem-solving skills; who pays close attention to detail; and who exercises initiative to help further Mona’s commercial and creative digital goals. If you understand and are passionate about beautiful web design, digital architectures, platforms and database technologies; if you’re quick to pick up emerging technologies, and if you love working collaboratively as part of a dynamic team, then this is the role for you. In collaboration with the Senior Engineer and the rest of the digital team, you will help extend and improve the digital presence for all of Mona’s business units and subsidiary brands.

Creative collaboration

  • Research and advise on the latest front-end technologies to achieve innovative and creative digital design concepts, while maintaining the best UI and UX practices.
  • Collaborate with creatives and designers to turn creative concepts into digital realities
  • Assist the digital team with the rollout of digital marketing campaigns, including HTML email campaigns.

  • Possess excellent development skills in CSS, HTML, Javascript, React and third party libraries or frameworks.
  • Build front-end experiences using data from REST and/or GraphQL APIs, and help design APIs that translate between front- and back-end systems.
  • Familiarity with techniques for managing and improving project quality: cross-browser testing, performance analysis, monitoring and alerting.
  • Maintain and improve online stores and ecommerce systems, especially using Shopify.

  • As part of the digital team, help manage the full cycle of digital development, including planning, design, architecture, testing, implementation and maintenance of digital applications and websites.
  • Integrate and manage adjacent platforms and technologies to support various stakeholders with e-commerce systems and report-building requirements; implementation of complex online ticketing requirements; and other business requirements as they arise.

Technical Collaboration

  • Collaborate on finding the best way to build and run our digital platforms with the Senior Engineer, Head of Digital and Mona’s IT department
  • As directed by the Senior Engineer, work with the IT department to guide the management of scalable computing systems and software architecture for Mona
  • Provide technical mentoring, collaboration, advocacy and knowledge sharing amongst the digital and broader communications team
  • Create and maintain a high level of front- and back-end documentation
  • Stay up-to-date with new and emerging web and internet technologies
  • Support the team with strategic digital requirements

The You

  • 5 or more years of industry experience as a full stack (front-end weighted with some back-end experience) developer and minimum Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or relevant field or equivalent experience
  • Excellent skills in HTML5, CSS3, and React
  • Experience with API-driven development
  • Strong skills in Javascript, (ECMA 9) and Node development; Typescript and JQuery a plus
  • Some experience with relational databases and SQL
  • A good understanding of AWS foundational knowledge and associated technologies and services
  • A working understanding of DNS and content delivery networks
  • Expert in GIT version control
  • Strong skills in SEO-friendly development, and UI and UX design and development principles
  • A strong understanding of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new development environments
  • A good understanding of digital marketing tools (Google Analytics, SEO, Google Tag Manager)
  • Ability to take initiative and develop solutions to problems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate and negotiate with technical and non-technical staff to get the best result
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to complete tasks thoroughly while working towards multiple deadlines and managing your own time
  • Experience with content management systems (CMSs) like Contentful, Umbraco, Prismic or similar
  • Experience with Shopify is extremely beneficial
  • Experience using and reporting from Tessitura is a plus
  • Most important: we want someone who is smart, curious, and keen to learn - who has initiative and thoroughness (e.g. someone who reads to the end of the dot-points). If this is you but you fall short on some of the requirements above, get in touch—we’re looking for the right person, not just ticking boxes.

Mona Perks

  • Parties: prepare for a life of festival tickets, music gigs, exhibition openings, limited edition booze releases, staff discount codes, Mona parties, and exclusive access to the museum and all its hidden bits and bobs.
  • Training: Our boss, David, loves to learn stuff. So that’s a key part of our DNA —every Mona employee is expected to go on a knowledge journey. We support this with both budget and time.
  • Work/Life balance: we take it seriously—you’re in Tassie, so make the most of it. We’ll make work as fun, fulfilling and stress free as we can—there’s a lot more important things than Mona.
  • Autonomy: We’re a glorified startup, so prepare for no bureaucracy—you’ll be identifying problems then authoring the solutions… STAT.
  • Networking: You’ll get to meet and work with some amazing people and companies. Your little black book will thank you.
  • Resume builder: Mona’s internal agency is one of the highest profile and awarded in Australia, mostly because we get to work on so much fun stuff. As a result you’ll make great work, great contacts and get a lot of people hitting you up on LinkedIn.

Contribution to Culture:

Mona’s continually evolving culture is a reflection on the attitudes and behaviour of the staff who make our workplace a unique, supportive and enjoyable environment.  As an employee of Mona, it is your responsibility to contribute to this culture through displaying a positive and cooperative attitude, and by ensuring the mental and physical wellbeing of yourself and your colleagues is prioritised in the undertaking of your work.
