Mona publishes high-end illustrated books alongside an innovative art exhibition program and is looking for an experienced editor/production controller to step into the role of Publications Manager.
Reporting to the Director of Curatorial Affairs, the Publications Manager is responsible for editing, scheduling, costing and managing books from commission to print. This role requires strong editorial and project management skills, along with experience in print production and copyright. The ability to be flexible, self-directed and comfortable with the complexities of illustrated books is essential to success in this role, as is being able to embrace the challenge of working outside a traditional publishing environment.
The Publications Manager will work closely with employees from the Collections, Curatorial, Exhibition Development and Communications team, though there will be no direct supervision requirements. Externally, there will be a requirement to engage regularly with contractors.
The Gig:
• Handle all stages of editorial and print production
• Set up and adhere to book production schedules
• Create and manage project costings and keep within budget
• Develop exhibition catalogues in collaboration with curators
• Copyediting and proofreading, following house style
• Work closely with in-house designers
• Manage prepress and print production
• Gain copyright permissions
• Engage freelancers as required and provide project direction
• Pursue high standards of reproduction and quality control
• Manage copyright permissions and related legal advice
• Maintain and develop Mona style sheets
• Apply for CiP data
The You:
Essential skills
• At least five years’ experience in project-managing and editing books
• Experience in print production, with exposure to illustrated / art titles
• Superior working knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation
• Willingness to self-manage, work with autonomy and meet tight deadlines
• Flexibility and problem-solving skills
• Strong written and verbal skills
• Great attention to detail
• Experience editing and proofing on screen (in MS Word and Adobe Acrobat)
• Ability to remain calm under pressure and work effectively with a wide range of personalities
• Ability to thrive in a non-traditional publishing environment
Desirable skills
• Positive and self-motivated
• Experience in copyright and permissions
• An interest in art / art publishing
• Proficiency in French
